Indigenous Arts Talk (on beading and weaving practices)

Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 12:00 PM until 1:00 PMPacific Standard Time UTC -08:00

Guest curator Michael Holloman and visiting artist Jacy Sohappy will speak about Indigenous beading and weaving practices as they relate to artworks and cultural materials featured in the exhibition Here in a Homemade Forest: Common Reading Connections at WSU’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Holloman will emphasize the importance of intergenerational knowledge and the artworks as living items, not only in relation to the materials from which they are made, but also in how they are used in community. Sohappy, the Traditional Arts Manager for Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, will add context based on her personal experience as a maker.  Sohappy is leading two popular Round Bag weaving workshops at the museum on Feb. 23 and 24; all participation spots are filled.  Hosted by the WSU Common Reading Program and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, with special thanks to Global Campus.
